Week of September 26th-30th

on September 30, 2022

We had two amazing visitors this week! Our first visitor was the Birmingham Children’s Theater on Tour, featuring Amelia Erhart. It was a wonderful performance to enjoy our updated gym and stage for the first time. Our second visitor was Kevin Pence, a retired meteorologist, and grandfather of one of our students. Mr. Pence gave us an amazing presentation about the weather, what causes different types of weather conditions, and what it takes to be a meteorologist. In Geography, Mr. Zech followed up on Mr. Pence’s presentation with a discussion on hurricane Ian.

In 6th-year history, students have been investigating the assassination of President Lincoln, and the attempted assassination of Andrew Jackson and William Seward. Students reviewed eyewitness testimonies, letters, police reports, and transcriptions involving the numerous individuals suspected of conspiring to dissolve the government so that the Confederacy could regain control. After several classes of analyzing and discussing the information given, students decided on the suspect’s innocence or guilt in conspiring to assassinate the President, Vice-president, and Secretary of State. Students were only a hung jury when it came to Dr. Mudd’s involvement. Ask your 6th-year student about their opinion on Dr. Mudd, and how his name is associated with a popular figurative phrase.
